Frequently asked questions

What happens when a protected PC restarts?

The PC returns to the clean state it was in when protection was enabled. Installed programs, saved files and changed settings on protected volumes are discarded, except for the folders and registry keys you excluded.

Does RebootGuard slow down games?

Protection relies on built-in Windows technologies designed to keep the performance impact low, but the actual impact varies with hardware and storage type. Test your most important games on one PC before rolling out.

Can players save their game progress?

Yes, in two ways: cloud saves offered by most platforms, or excluding the game's save folder from protection so it persists after a reboot.

How do I update games?

Put the PCs into Maintenance mode or schedule an overnight maintenance window, update the games, then re-enable protection. Another option is to keep the games library on an unprotected drive.

What is the difference between Windows Pro and Enterprise in RebootGuard?

Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise use the Unified Write Filter (UWF). Pro uses a native-boot VHDX differencing disk, which needs the disk layout prepared and more free space. For the user the result is the same: a clean state after every restart.

Does RebootGuard disable Defender or Secure Boot?

No. RebootGuard does not disable Microsoft Defender, Secure Boot or Memory Integrity (HVCI), and uses no kernel modifications.

Does it need a permanent internet connection?

No. The Master needs internet for activation and then for periodic renewal before the offline grace period ends. Protection on the gaming PCs works over the local network only.

What happens if my license expires?

Protection continues during the offline grace period. After the license expires, management features may be limited according to the license terms. See the license terms for details, and renew from the Customer Portal to avoid interruption.

How do I move my license to a new PC?

Deactivate the license on the old Master, then activate it on the new PC. If the old PC is no longer accessible, request a transfer from the Customer Portal.

Can I protect only some PCs?

Yes. You can control each device individually or organize devices into groups, and you can choose which volumes are protected on each PC.

Do you collect data from my PCs?

The Master contacts the license server for activation and renewal. Diagnostic logs are sent to support only with your consent, and they contain no passwords, user files or game data. See the data collection policy for details.

Does it work with VALORANT and Riot Vanguard?

It is still in testing. RebootGuard does not modify Vanguard and does not disable Secure Boot, TPM or HVCI, which it may require. We publish results on the Compatibility page and do not guarantee compatibility. RebootGuard is not affiliated with Riot.

What stops someone on the network from controlling my PCs?

Every command is digitally signed with the Master key the client pinned at enrollment, and the client rejects unsigned commands or commands signed by another key. The connection is encrypted with TLS, and new devices are not managed until an admin approves them.

How do I uninstall RebootGuard?

Put the PC into Maintenance mode and restart it first, then uninstall from the Master or with an administrator account. If you try to uninstall while the PC is protected, the uninstall itself will be rolled back at the next restart.
